Love at the Apple Blossom Inn by Kristy Tate, Book Review

General Information
Genre~ Romance
Published~ January 7, 2015

Book Summary (Per Amazon)
A small town girl.
A rock star living a lie.
Their paths cross and lead them down a road neither of them expected to find: love at the Apple Blossom Inn.
Janey knows that life doesn’t come with a happy-ending guarantee. She needs to keep her feet securely on the ground working two jobs, going to school, and caring for her little brother. She has no time or room for romance.
After an accident leaves his charmed life in ruins, Derrick abandons his Hollywood lifestyle and checks into rehab. The world believes that Derrick Cordell the rock star is dead. And despite his beating heart and breathing lungs, that’s exactly how he feels until, disguised and living incognito in the tiny town of Rose Arbor, Washington, he meets Janey, who loves him as plain old Eric Roudell, the wanna-be music teacher.
But secrets have a way of unraveling. When Janey discovers the truth about Eric/Derrick, how can she love someone she doesn’t even know? Especially since love is not on her to-do list?

My Thoughts

Short and sweet.  I laughed and I enjoyed the relationship that developed in this book.  I do think my favorite character was actually the inn keeper though:)  I did not realize this was a novella when I first started reading it, but since it was over so fast I checked and was like ahhh yes a series!!  I hope the series continues to touch base with Janey and Eric because they were a very relateable and likable couple.

I read Kristy Tate the first time when I reviewed the amazing book Beyond the Fortuneteller's Tent, so when I received the opportunity to review another one of her books I scrambled to say yes!  I am glad I did as this was a fantastic introduction to a cute community and what was a sweet romantic story with enough to entice me into wandering what love and hi-jinks certain characters find in their own story!

After his release, he came out a beast with more secrets and lies than his cage could hold.

Excerpt
After he leaves, I open his wallet, reading his name, address, weight. All of it.
“Phillip DeLuca.” I taste his name running off my lips as I trace my finger over his picture. He’s so handsome. He’s the kind of guy most people would be afraid of, but not me. I want to get to know him. Lost in a daydream, my car door is yanked open.
“Where the fuck is it, bitch?”
“What?” I shriek as I’m pulled out of the car and slammed forward onto the hot hood. “I don’t have anything!” I scream, trying to pull free. He shoves me back down on the hood. His hand tangled in my hair.
“Don’t think about moving,” he spits, his tone harsh. I roll my eyes and continue leaning over the hood. My heart slams against my chest in pure panic, and my hands shake. He pulls away and leans in to the car. Within seconds, he finds his wallet. Shit.
He peers at me with a fierce energy in his eyes. The intensity has me pulling off the hood, scared out of my mind.
“You have some balls,” he mutters, shoving his wallet back in his pocket. His tone is soft and tender suddenly. I turn my head and eye him angrily.
“Fuck you.” I cross my arms and lean my hip against the car. My choice of words more confident than I’m feeling.
He steps up to me and grabs my hips hard with both hands. My skin burns, and my mouth parts with desire. His brown eyes find mine, and his hands yank my body closer to his. I feel like all the air is sucked from my lungs as I search his dark eyes. Placing my hands on his solid chest to steady myself, my palms buzz with excitement.
“You’d like that, wouldn’t you?” He looks me up and down and leans in close. “You’d like it if I pushed you over the hood of this car and fucked you ‘til your legs gave out.” His words feather against my lips, he’s so close. I hold my breath, willing my body to pull away, but I don’t move. Just when I think he’s going to kiss me, he grabs my hand and pulls it upward. I furrow my brows and watch as he pulls a pen from his back pocket, pulling the cap off with his teeth. He writes his number and the word ‘Lip’ on my hand.
“Call me. Don’t make me come find you, Cherry.”
“Cherry?” I ask out loud.
“Your swimsuit,” he yells over his shoulder before starting his bike. I look down at my white shirt noticing my cherry bikini peeking out from the bust line. A smile creeps across my face. I know I shouldn’t like him, but I kind of do. Driving past me, he winks and I swear I sigh like a damn fool.

Devoted in Death by JD Robb, Book Review

General Information
Genre: Suspense, Crime,
Published: September 15, 2015
Publisher: Putnam

Book Summary (Per Author's Website)
When Lieutenant Eve Dallas examines a body in a downtown Manhattan alleyway, the victim’s injuries are so extensive that she almost misses the clue. Carved into the skin is the shape of a heart—and initials inside reading E and D.
Ella-Loo and her boyfriend, Darryl, had been separated while Darryl was a guest of the state of Oklahoma, and now that his sentence has been served they don’t ever intend to part again. Ella-Loo’s got dreams. And Darryl believes there are better ways to achieve your dreams than working for them. So they hit the road, and when their car breaks down in Arkansas, they make plans to take someone else’s. Then things get messy and they wind up killing someone—an experience that stokes a fierce, wild desire in Ella-Loo. A desire for Darryl. And a desire to kill again.
Now they’ve landed in Eve Dallas' jurisdiction and  she has every intention of hunting them down and giving them what they truly deserve . . .

My Thoughts
If you are an Eve Dallas fan who reads for the crimes, the investigation, the dialogue between partners and criminals... You. Will. LOVE. this addition to the In Death series.  The entire cast or list of characters that I had grown to love seeing in each book were not present this time and I thought it was somewhat refreshing..though I probably would have enjoyed it if they were in there since I love the witty banter between Eve and so many of the other characters.

This book shows, beautifully in my opinion, Eve and Roarke's evolving relationship, and thus I loved that it was not a focus of the book, but something that was there and understood.  I enjoyed that the focus was on the crime, investigation, how Eve demonstrated more trust and developing/showcasing her leadership role more in this story.   Even though the focus was on the crime I do still feel that this entire series has an interesting and lovely ongoing discussion about what love means at all levels. One of my favorite parts was when Eve broke the news about the detective exam to Baxter and Trueheart.

The criminals and their take on love were a new twist for this series which I am thankful for because so many times a series starts to tell the same story, but each time I read a JD Robb book I now I am in for a treat!  New characters, locations, events, thought processes, etc. make each In Death book a new adventure with people that I have grown to love and enjoy.

I cannot wait to read the next book and I love that this year we still have the anthology to enjoy that she was part of!  I have not read it yet, but I will post a link to the anthology Down the Rabbit Hole, here. This will be one of the next books I read though..so keep an eye out!

General Information
Genre: Romance
Published: September 3, 2015

Book Summary (Per Goodreads)
Do you believe in fate? Do you believe that there’s one person in the universe that you’re meant to be with? What would you do if you found them? Would you pursue them? What if they fought the attraction? Would you give up?

Avery Southerland knows that she is meant to be with Cameron Sutter. She’s known since the moment she met him. He isn’t just her partner in crime, he’s the one that makes her heart skip a beat.

Cam is a flirt, but not the playboy his brother once was. He knows how to be friends with a girl. He’s firmly put Avery in the friend zone, but she’s determined to show Cam that she can be more. She can be what he needs and deserves if he’ll let her.

Sometimes we’re lucky enough to find the one we’re meant to be with. Some may say its chance, but others believe its fate.

My Thoughts
A few weeks ago I did a post on the release blitz of this book. I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of this book as well so, as I have read and enjoyed other H.D'Agostino books, I could not wait to dive into this book!

This book was sweet and adorable.  I loved the characters, the drama, the writing, the emotions, the surprises and the ending!  I had some chuckles and some shock at some of the scenes.  I thought the way the story flowed was brilliant and helped build a rich experience for me the reader!  I liked that the book was not just about Cam and Avery, but also included their friends, family and conflict.  I know say conflict?!!?!?! But I did because it created a more realistic romance story for me...silly maybe but i felt like this was a story that could happen for or to someone!  I would recommend this book for anyone who is wanting a fun, sweet and enjoyable romance to read:)

The Height Series by Lauren Stewart, Press Blitz

The Heights Button

Unseen 1400x2190
synopsis

Unseen -

Job security isn’t something Addison is all that concerned with. Death, however? Yeah, death is a major concern.

After Addison finds a nearly-dusted vampire in the garbage outside her building, her ability to stay off the paranormal radar is deader than the vamp. Almost as dead as she’ll be if anyone thinks she put him there. Even though she’s basically shoving a stake into her own chest, she has no other choice but to get him indoors before he dusts in front of a human. And just when she thinks life couldn’t possibly get any worse, she finds out who he is.

As vampire king and Prime to all races of supernatural beings in this zone, Rhyse gets what he wants when he wants it. But after being ambushed, he wakes up chained to a bed with a hole in his chest and, unfortunately, he needs help to discover who tried to kill him. His only ally is his captor, someone unaware she has the power to bring down their entire world.

While a prophesized war brews in the Heights, Addison and Rhyse must decide which carries more risk—trusting someone who could destroy you or trusting someone who could love you?

* * *

The Heights not only protects the secrecy of vampires, shifters, demons, angels, and other supernaturals, it protects the humans unaware of the world hidden within their own.

synopsis

Unearthed-

“What would you give up for freedom?” “Everything.” “Even if it wasn’t yours?”

For three years, Keira lived in hell on earth, kept and tortured by a psychopath. He should’ve killed her. Because now she’s looking for payback, to see his face when she shoves a stake into his chest, to feel his dust under her boot. Then she’ll finally be free…of everything but the memories, scars, and nightmares. Unfortunately, when a demon starts hunting the same prey, Keira’s life becomes less about getting revenge and more about fighting temptation.

For three tours above the earth’s crust, Davyn has been as close to heaven as a demon can be. In a few weeks, he’ll go home to be reforged, stripped of all the humanity he’s accumulated and reminded of exactly what he is. Of course, in the depths of hell, nobody “finds themselves” through group therapy and happy pills. It’s not all bad news though—before he goes, at least he gets to kill a vampire. Maybe a human too, if that stubborn little hunter keeps getting in his way. After all, a nice ass can only buy so much of Davyn’s patience.

Two people from opposite sides of a war will discover the price of freedom and what they’re willing to pay for it. But in the Heights, nothing is ever fair. For something they both want, one of them will pay with their eternity.

Miss Mayhem by Rachel Hawkins, Book Review

General Information
Genre: YA, Fantasy
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile
Published: April 7, 2015

Book Summary (per Goodreads)
Life is almost back to normal for Harper Price. The Ephors have been silent after their deadly attack at Cotillion months ago, and her best friend, Bee, has returned after a mysterious disappearance. Now Harper can focus on the important things in life: school, canoodling with David (her nemesis-turned-ward-slash-boyfie), and even competing in the Miss Pine Grove pageant.

Unfortunately, supernatural chores are never done. The Ephors have decided they’d rather train David than kill him. The catch: Harper has to come along for the ride, but she can’t stay David’s Paladin unless she undergoes an ancient trial that will either kill her . . . or make her more powerful than ever.

My Thoughts
I enjoyed this book.  I found that it flowed seamlessly from the first story and kept the story going very well.  The writing style was superb and kept me intrigued.  I loved seeing the relationships and story lines develop even more for all the characters.  The imagery for this story was exquisite and I loved the settings for the tests and big moments of the story.

However there were two things that I did not find as great or captivating in this book.  I do not enjoy love triangles for the most part and this kind of fell into the category of why I don't like triangles.  I thought the cliffhanger at book 1 was shocking and was intrigued to see what happened in this book.  However after reading book 2, all I can say is that I strongly dislike her ex-boyfriend. ..I might be questioning my thoughts on a friend as well..just saying..I feel uneasy about her interactions with Harper.  The second thing I had a hard time with was that I felt that I knew the ending way before the cliffhanger of book two.  I read a lot so a pet peeve of mine is if I think I know what the twists to a plot are before I actually read them.

Now with that I think this book is superb because even with those two issues I had when I finished reading the book I was like what ...no..that can't be the ending is there a third book?  What happens? She can't let that be the ending that goes against the grain of her personality!!

I would recommend this book and look forward to seeing what happens in the next installment of this series!

Annette Lyon Collection~ A Timeless Romance Anthology, Book Review

General Information
Genre~ Romance
Publisher
Published

Book Summary (Per Amazon)
The ANNETTE LYON COLLECTION contains brand new contemporary romance novella OUR SONG, as well as five hand-picked readers’ and reviewers’ favorites of Annette’s popular Timeless Romance Anthology novellas. Readers will love this selection of three contemporary and three historical romance novellas.

In OUR SONG, a charming romance novella, Cassie and Matt have been dating in the Yellowstone area for two years, and things are, well, average. When Cassie meets up with two college friends who are visiting, their love lives like sound like fairy tales: rose petals, chocolates, candles on the beach… Cassie goes home feeling like she’s missing out. After all, repeatedly watching Old Faithful erupt and walking through sulfur-smelling gases at Fountain Paint Pot don’t exactly say “romance.” Maybe things with Matt aren’t going anywhere, and it’s time to move on. Then she discovers that perception and reality are completely different things. Now she can only hope it isn’t too late to show Matt how much she really cares.

In the sweet novella GOLDEN SUNRISE, Natalie takes time out of her crazy schedule to fly to Vegas for her best friend’s wedding. Sierra and Jason, high-school sweethearts, are finally getting married. Fortunately for Natalie, her old high-school flame, Adam, has a work commitment and can’t be there as best man. But when she arrives at the wedding rehearsal—late and ragged—Adam is there. When Adam makes a wild suggestion, Natalie just may take him up on it, even though she knows he’s moved on. A single choice may mean Natalie is taking a shot at reclaiming the past—or that she's putting her heart in harm’s way a second time.

FIRSTS AND LASTS, an enchanting novella, begins with Dani’s last week in New York. She’s failed in her dreams to catch a break as an actress and is now ready to return home and dust herself off. As she visits the places on her final to-see list, she meets Mark, another New York City transplant with big dreams. Except Mark hasn’t given up on his. As they spend the day together, Dani realizes that even though she hasn’t hit the “big time” she might be living her dream after all. Only problem: she has a one-way ticket back home.

In the compelling novella WAR OF HEARTS, Anna, a journalist, is desperate to escape the magazine where Pete, her now-former boyfriend, also works. Heartbroken and still in love with him, Anna snags an assignment to cover the Winter War in Finland. She arrives at a snowy Finnish battlefront only to discover that Pete is already there—as her photographer. She’s determined to be professional about the situation until a battle breaks out in camp, putting her and Pete in harm’s way and putting their love to the test.

The captivating novella BETWEEN THE LINES follows Jane Martin, who is intelligent but extremely shy, especially around men. When the Aid and Cultural Society proposes a letter-writing program, Jane signs up, hoping she can find true friendship. The program doesn’t run as smoothly as expected, and unknown to Jane, one of the men in her city becomes her writing friend. Thomas Allred has always known shy and quiet Jane, but reading her letters written to his secret persona, opens his eyes to what an amazing woman she is. The only trouble is, Jane doesn’t know that the man who she is falling in love with through letters is also Thomas, the man who is falling in love with her in person.

In the charming novella A TASTE OF HOME, we meet Claire Jennings, who’s on her way to spend Christmas with her family. As she rides the train with William Rhodes, who grew up across the street, memories of the past flood her mind. He may be twenty-one now, but she can’t forget his torturous teasing from their school years. At the rail station, Claire discovers her home is under quarantine because her little brother has measles. She's stuck in town, away from her family, on her favorite holiday, with William.

My Thoughts
Each one of these stories was incredibly detailed, sweet and short.  The entire anthology was a quick and enjoyable read.  For those that like a sweet romance that alludes to the intimacy but focuses more on the surrounding romance or story this anthology would be right up your alley!

The anthology does not have anything in common across the stories regarding characters, locations, etc., but all the books still flow together very well because of how the emotion of love is what is sought and found in each novella.  What I enjoyed the most is that while the time period changed I could still envision the story occurring.  Who hasn't had that person that picked on them all the time, or the self doubts about someone falling in love with them, or doing something drastic to get away from someone, etc.  While I do not think I would re-read this anthology since the summary reminds me of the entire story, I did enjoy these characters and their path to a happily ever after; and I would like to read more of this author's work.

Book Summary (Per Goodreads)
Grad student, Lisa Richardson, scours the high country in search of her beloved boreal toad. The amphibian is in danger of extinction, a fate she is determined to change. Single-minded in her focus, Lisa doesn’t realize that she’s being followed by a mysterious stranger.

Enter McIntyre Walsh. Ex-marine with a heart of gold, this man lives and breathes duty. Protection. Content with his self-exile on a mountaintop in Colorado, he inadvertently witnesses a female hiker in danger, a situation he cannot ignore yet is unable to rectify. When their paths cross, Lisa and Walsh refuse to stray from their avowed goals, and carry on—despite the other.

It isn’t until a killer ramps up his game that both are forced to relent. Battling the rugged terrain of the Rocky Mountains and an undeniable attraction between them, Lisa and Walsh must work together against the odds if they intend to get off the mountain alive.

My Thoughts
I was intrigued by the book summary, but not really sure about trying this book because of the cover.  I know that sounds somewhat harsh, but I was worried it was going to be eh from my perception of the cover...well..I was wrong..so wrong.  I enjoyed this book a great deal.

The characters had depth to them, the relationship(s) were very detailed and I could visualize them, I felt connected to the story and I kept trying to figure out who the killer was I was so invested in this story!  I was sure I knew who the killer was, but alas I was so wrong.
I did think parts of the book were a bit odd or left incomplete; such as, the relationship with the professor and her research partner.  I was somewhat surprised by some of the internal thoughts at the end of the book regarding the professor as I did not see that at all.  However, those parts do not even come close to outweighing the delight I felt from seeing Lisa and Walsh take on the mountains, nature, a killer and their own doubts.  I would recommend this book to people who like their romance with a bit of suspense or their suspense stories with a wee bit of romance!

Gluten and Allergen Free Wellness Event~ Sweet Treats

So many goodies..so many.

If you were able to attend the GFAF Wellness Event in Raleigh NC in August than you know that there was a plethora of sweets available as samples, for purchasing and to just drool over.  I enjoyed sampling, going home with some in the blogger bag and my purchases!  I can't wait to make so many of the mixes that were available!  For this post I am just going to highlight a few of the vendors that stuck out to me with their pastry or sweet dishes!

Their table was full of all types of delicious treats!  I immediately felt like a child in a candy store and didn't even know what to look at or try first.  I tried their chocolate chip cookie and it was divine.  Then when I got home they had a sample in the blogger bag of a cheesecake brownie bar and it was absolutely fantastically mouthwatering delicious.  If you are looking for a great gluten free treat this is a place you should check out!

So good!  The nutty blondie's from Kanundrumz Bakery are delicious!  I love the presentation, sign, taste of the products and more!  I enjoyed talking and learning about what all goes into the blondie, the growth of the company and where I can find them again (because yes you will want to buy more after your try your first one!)

Caly's Kitchen
I was so excited to see these in my blogger bag.  The very first company I saw and table I went to was Caly's Kitchen.  Their table was clean and fresh and just grabbed my attention.  I tried their cookies while I was there and immediately went to purchase some..seriously so good!  The taste was pure, good and left a sweet and decadent aftertaste.  When I got home and saw more cookies, a mix and granola in my bag..swoon..I was Thrilled!!  I have since garbled up those cookies (really y'all I could be called a cookie monster at this juncture), tried the bread and oh my oh my oh my..you need to try it!  If you like Chocolate Chip Banana Bread mix..you need this in your kitchen...AND when I went to check their website tonight..that mix is on sale! (no I am not affiliated with this company..just saw it was on sale, loved the product and thought I would share!)  Then the granola..oh the granola..plain, in yogurt, as a snack or as breakfast..sign me up..it was a perfect combination of crunchy, tasty, sweet and more!

Shut the front door this was out of this world good.  I mean lick your fingers, the bowl and more delicious!  Additionally not only are they gluten free..they are dairy free, non-GMO, and address many other allergens that many must deal with daily.  This is a NC company which makes me so excited to know that a company close to my home is taking the time and care of helping make delicious treats for everyone!  Also, when I saw this mix I was thrilled because one of the best items I tasted at the GFAF Wellness Event was their blueberry muffin.  I literally stopped everything and just stared at their table because I could not believe this tasty, light, fluffy amazingness was gluten free and vegan.

So good and light!  These were some treats that were given in the blogger bags, but I did not see a table for them.  However, I wish there had been because their treats that I have tried are AMAZING.  After trying two different treats that tasted fresh, light, sweet and caused me no side effects I can't wait to place an order and try more of their products!  Their website looks decadent and a dessert lovers dream:)

I loved trying these treats and more at the GFAF Wellness Event and can't wait to continue using even more products that I will post reviews on later!  What are some of your favorite gluten free companies for delicious and fresh treats?  Do they address other allergy concerns?

Until my next post..love y'all!!
